A good candidate for audio mastering should have overall levels that fall between -3db & -6db. This will provide the needed headroom for the mastering engineer to manipulate the frequencies during final equalization and apply the needed compression, limiting and spatial enhancement to bring your recording up to industry standards.
Effects: Sometimes less is more. We recommend keeping the effects on your individual tracks, but do not apply effects to your 2 track stereo mix/master tracks. Many times, we receive audio that has been over processed and/or over compressed during the mix down stage in an attempt to achieve industry standard levels. This can only be accomplished during the mastering process. Cranking up the levels on your individual tracks may introduce or increase unwanted noise and or distortion possibly disqualifying your project as a candidate for professional mastering services.
